National Sandwich Day- November 3rd

Written by Biggie on November 1, 2019

I wanted to remind everyone that National Sandwich Day is on November 3rd.

I know many food holidays are silly but why would we not celebrate something that is eaten 300 million times a day.  Yes, that is right Americans eat over 300 million sandwiches a day.  As we already know sandwiches are great and can be enjoyed with various ingredients inside.  So I am happy to be celebrating the Sandwich!

Did you know we can thank the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu and his gambling problem for the sandwich to gain popularity?  He would gamble for hours and would not want to leave the table so he would ask for meat and bread and would sandwich them together.  This great idea, of course, caught on and it has not stopped since.

From my research, it looks like John Montagu traveled abroad to Turkey and Greece meeze platters – where cheeses, dips, and meats would be sandwiched between one another.

If you were to go 2000 years before 1762 Montagu Sandwich trend- you would know that Hillel, the elder was enjoying a sandwich of his own.  During his time, during Seder, Jews were told to eat a piece of the meat prepared for Seder,  the bitter herbs, and matzah, to remind them of their history.  Hillel would combine the three items, putting the meat and the bitter herbs between pieces of matzah, and ate them together- technically being the first sandwich.

These are some of the facts I wanted to share with you today on National Sandwich Day!
