James Gunn knows all about superhero’s, aliens and raccoons! These are all things that have led him to making one of the most successful and critically acclaimed superhero movies- Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
For those that don’t know James Gunn, he started doing independent films in 1995 where he learned everything from screenplay, production, scouting locations, directing and film distribution. He even created his own movie poster for his 1st film- Tromeo and Juliet.
In 2000, he wrote, produced, and performed in his 1st Superhero movie called The Specials; a superhero comedy.
From there, he was the writer for Scooby Doo, Dawn of the Dead and also wrote/directed the horror-comedy Slither.
In 2008, he worked on a comedy series called Sparky and Mikaela. It was a series he described as being “about a human raccoon crime fighting team and they fight crime in both the forest world, among the furry animals, and in the human world”.
In 2010, he worked with Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page in a dark Superhero comedy called – Super.
This whole journey led him to co-write and direct a small obscure Marvel comic, Guardians of the Galaxy, into becoming the highest-grossing superhero film of 2014. It has made over $771 million worldwide.
If you have not seen this movie- you will enjoy it. James says it best- “The Guardians are a group of oddballs, outcasts, and geeks. The movie is for anyone who ever felt cast aside, left out, or different. It’s for all of us who don’t belong.”
It is very inspiring to see someone build and continue to build from his success. It’s phenomenal to see him experience and create the success he has with a movie based on a comic book that is not known or as popular as other Marvel comics. I am beyond excited for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.
