National Cuban Sandwich Day

Today- August 23rd is National Cuban Sandwich Day thanks to reporter Christopher Spata of the Tampa Bay Times.  Chris actually made the day up and then shared it with food bloggers and media and it took off from there.  I am ok with the day being made up because we get to celebrate it (I am sure someone made up all the other National ____ Days too.  I enjoy a good Cuban Sandwich and any excuse to celebrate a sandwich I say!

The Cuban Sandwich is comprised of Cuban Bread. The loaf is sliced into lengths of 8–12 inches, lightly buttered or brushed with butter or some olive oil on the crust, and cut in half horizontally. A coat of yellow mustard is spread on the bread. Then sliced roast pork, glazed ham, Swiss cheese, and 3 thinly sliced dill pickles are added in layers to the sandwich. The sandwich is then pressed on a plancha and toasted- melting the cheese and the meats while toasting the bread.  The sandwich is then cut diagonal to be enjoyed. The bread is key to this sandwich as well as pressing it.

Now depending on where you are from you will say that the ingredients I mentioned above are correct or that I am missing an ingredient.  You see in Tampa, FL  their Cuban Sandwich also includes Salami.  This is because of the Italian bricklayers influence in Tampa. They also say that the Italian bricklayers influence also led to them putting a hot brick on top of the sandwich for a few minutes to make it flat.

Today is not the day to discuss whether salami is part of the true Cuban Sandwich.  Today is about celebrating the deliciousness of the Cuban Sandwich.

Being Cuban (I know I don’t look it) and having family in Miami – I was brought up going down to Miami to see family and we would always go somewhere to enjoy a Cuban Sandwich.  I loved it. Also the reason why our Cuban Sandwich shirt is Miami themed.

I do believe that the key to the sandwich is the delicious Cuban Bread those-yeast, flour, water and lard.

Many places have Cuban sandwiches on their menu- just promise me that you will try to enjoy your next one at a place that has real Cuban bread – and pressed not just toasted!
